Register to Vote CONUS or OCONUS

In the CONUS you can visit your State's Election Website. Most sites now have the ability to fill out and print your voter registration online and mail it in to the address provided on your printout.

You can use this PDF Postcard Form and Guide no matter what state you are in. Or visit your State's Voter Registration site. I've complied a list of links for each state below.
Alright Here We Go...

That took some time to compile, but if it helps one person register to vote it was more than worth the time :)

Finally,
If you are OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) a great place to get started would be the Federal Voting Assistance Program.

All military units have voting assistance officers, and each American embassy or consulate can help U.S. citizens exercise their rights to vote.

LT Jason Watkins is the Navy's Service Voting Action Officer He provides assistance concerning unique questions and/or problems for navy personnel and their families that is covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.

Contact your local installation Voting Assistance Officer. If you are unable to obtain information locally, contact the LT Jason Watkins, (901) 874-6647,DSN: 882-6647, Option 5, toll free: 1-866-827-5672, Option 6 or Fax: (901) 874-6844, DSN 882-6844

September is National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is an important reminder about each American’s civic responsibility to prepare for emergencies,” said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Are there recourses specifically for Navy Families? What is Operation Prepare?

Operation Prepare, a fleet-wide education and awareness campaign on emergency preparedness, provides Navy family members with valuable tools and resources to help them be more prepared in the event of natural disasters.

Operation Prepare provides emergency preparedness tools and resources online at www.cnic.navy.mil. From facts sheets on various disasters—natural and manmade hazards, fast-spreading diseases and terrorist events—to planning forms and an emergency supplies checklist, preparing for all types of emergencies has never been easier. All materials are tailored for the Navy and are consistent with information from myriad sources such as the American Red Cross, Centers for Disease Control, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security.

Reagan Strike Group and American Idol have something in common...

There are more than 7,000 sailors on the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and the six ships in its strike group! There were 7100 fans in the audience last night at the American Idol Finalle.

Not sure of the exact quote but on the American Idol finale last night, David Cook mentioned that he was singing to 7000 people. That is still LESS than there are in the Ronald Reagan Strike Group! And that crowd was huge! It really opened my eyes to all the families that are going through the same thing we are.

I wish strength, courage, and happiness to all of my fellow Reagan Strike Group Families and to all our families with a loved one deployed!

USS Ronald Reagan & Stike Group Leaves for 6 Month Deployment

More than 7,000 sailors, 5,000 of them aboard the Reagan, are serving on the ships. Navy officials have not announced where the Reagan Strike Group is heading, but the deployment is scheduled to last six months.

The carrier strike group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville; guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur, USS Gridley and USS Howard; guided missile frigate USS Thach and fast combat support ship USNS Rainier.

Excerpt from NBCSandiego.com

~Sorry I've been MIA (but I'm sure those of you who have done this), you can understand that we were spending our last moments together before my Husband left on his WestPac. This is our 4th Pac together, one as a Newly Wed, one Pregnant with twins, one with 2 toddlers & a baby and finally this one, with 3 toddlers. Our 4th Pac in 7 years together, it feels like we just got back from our last deployment last year with the USS John C. Stennis.

While this one was the hardest yet to say goodbye, I am optimistic that this deployment will be the easiest. I am back down in San Diego by a really great friend and my Brother. I have a sitter (my brother's girl friend), and I DON'T live out in the middle of nowhere. Another bonus positive is that the twins are old enough to be in activities (ballet & piano).

Usually WestPacs find stir crazy women leaving for road trips and vacations to see family across the country, but I really love being here in San Diego. At this moment I can think of another place I'd rather be. I am a woman and have the prerogative to change my mind if I like so I may make a trip or two to AZ and if I REALLY feel like being adventurous I could take the kids to CO or TX, to see family and friends.

I channeled my energy yesterday with designing a few new items for the Navy Pride Store. A shirt that instead of saying Navy Brat (I've always disliked that term), I designed one that says Navy Princess. I also designed license plate frames for the USS Ronald Reagan.

Thanks for stopping by :)

ANOTHER April Desktop Calendar

I had to make another one LOL. I was inspired, I couldn't help it. So here is my second attempt. This time I used Shabby Princess' Promise Free Kit and Ida's Calendar 2008 and a template from Racketty Scrappety. Saved in PSD layers so all you have to do is place you pictures in, save and load up your new desktop background. It is the standard 1028x768 pixels made to fit most monitors beautifully, but I am biased.

Preview

Here is what I did with it...
If you like it you may download it here.

April Desktop Calendar

Alright so this has NOTHING to do with the Navy but I had to share... I put together this desktop background for this month (APRIL) and I just couldn't keep it to myself...

Here's how I used mine...
pics from Easter on the beach (Woods Cove) with the kids & my SIL Janet

I used the Festival free kit from Shabby Princess, Ida's Calendar 2008, & template from Rackety Scrapety. It is a layered PSD file so all you have to do is insert your own photos. Oh yea, it is made to fit most monitors {1028x768} Download it here.

Carrier Lincoln leaves on 7-month tour

The aircraft carrier deployed Thursday from Everett, WA where they are home ported and came on down to sunny San Diego to pick up their air wing and another 1,500 crew members. They are headed toward the Persian Gulf to support the global war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 3,600 crew members are expected to be gone for the standard six to seven month deployment.

~~~Good Luck and God Bless to all the crew and their families that are left behind.
~~~ Please stay safe!

We are up and running again!

Its good to be back :-) Missed writing my little blogs. The trusty old PC is now set up in the main living space of our place. Its actually kinda nice to be back on the ol' PC. Keys are a little clunky and its nice to be back on Windows XP and Mozilla. {The laptop had Vista}

Laptop + Coffee = Fried Laptop

Sorry about the lack of posts in the past few days. I (not the kids believe it or not), spilled my coffee on the laptop the other day. I tried to keep faith that after it dried out it would work, but no. Its a goner. I do have a personal computer, but it is secluded away from the rest of the family in a room full of boxes, children's clothes, and other random stuff we don't want the kids to getting into. We call it "the office". So as I type I have a baby gate across the doorway of "the office" and I can hear the kids quietly watching Micky Mouse Clubhouse.

I'll keep you posted, (as much as I can).

Take Care,
~Steph

Navy To Sink 15 Decommissioned Ships

By Zachary M. Peterson - Staff writer Posted : Monday Feb 25, 2008 9:47:25 EST

The majority of the ships the Navy plans to sink — 11 vessels of the 15 — are auxiliary ships. These ships will be replaced by T-AKE dry cargo and ammunition ships. The Lewis and Clark-class T-AKE ships replace three auxiliary ships: the Kilauea-class ammunition ships, the Mars-class combat stores ships and — when operating with a Henry J. Kaiser-class oiler — the Supply-class fast combat support ships.

Navy Missile Likely Hit Fuel Tank on Disabled Satellite

WASHINGTON (NNS) --
The missile fired from a U.S. Navy ship in the Pacific Ocean that hit a malfunctioning U.S. reconnaissance satellite late yesterday likely accomplished its goal of destroying the satellite's toxic fuel tank, a senior U.S. military officer said here today.Preliminary reports indicate the SM-3 missile struck its primary target, which was a tank full of toxic hydrazine rocket fuel carried aboard the 5,000-pound satellite, Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon news conference. "The intercept occurred. … We're very confident that we hit the satellite," Cartwright said. "We also have a high degree of confidence that we got the tank." -read more

Breast Cancer PetitionUrge Congress to stop "Drive-Through" Mastectomies!

This is a bit off topic for the Navy Pride Blog but it is imperative we get the word out about this important issue.

From a nurse:
I'll never forget the look in my patients eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies. So there I sat with my patients, giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank You" they muttered.

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a Mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure.Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important .. Please take the time and do it really quick! Please send this to everyone in your address book.

If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. Please consider taking the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require Insurance Companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.Lifetime Television has put this bill on their Web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the Web site below. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

http://www.lifetimetv.com/breastcancer/petition/signpetition.php
This takes about 2 seconds.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and family, and on behalf of all women,
THANKS.

USS Augusta Inactivated After 23 Years

"With stealth, persistence, agility and firepower, fast-attack submarines like Augusta are multi-mission capable – able to deploy and support special force operations, disrupt and destroy an adversary's military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity and ensure undersea superiority."
(exerpt from military.com)

FACTS ~
USS Augusta (SSN-710), a Los Angeles-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Augusta, Maine. (There were 3 other ships named USS Augusta that were named for Augusta, Georgia).

Her keel was laid down on 1 April 1982. She was launched on 21 January 1984 sponsored by Mrs. Diana D. Cohen, and commissioned on 19 January 1985, with Commander Thomas W. Turner in command.

The Soviet Navy claims that on 3 October 1986, Augusta, commanded by James von Suskil, collided with the 667AU Nalim (Yankee-I) class ballistic missile submarine K-219, commanded by Igor Britanov, off the coast of Bermuda. The United States Navy states that K-219 was disabled by an internal explosion.

Beginning in July 1987, Augusta began service as trials boat for the BQG-5D Wide Aperture Array (WAA) passive sonar system and carrying the prototype BQQ-10 ARCI sonars, which incorporate off-the-shelf computer components, allowing easy introduction of modular upgrades.

In 2003, the USS Augusta was one of a handful of submarines participating in Tomahawk Strikes against Iraq in the opening of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The boat successfully launched missiles against all assigned missions leaving the theater with 100% completion.

The USS Augusta underwent extensive maintenance during 2006 to prepare for six month deployment in 2007, which began in March and completed in September.

Augusta was homeported in Norfolk, VA before heading to Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, VA.
(some of these facts were found on wikipedia)

Navy tasked with destroying satellite

By Gayle S. Putrich - Staff writerPosted : Thursday Feb 14, 2008 20:22:30 EST

The Navy will attempt to shoot down an unresponsive spy satellite before it enters the Earth’s atmosphere because of concerns that the rocket fuel on board could harm people when it crashes, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

The Navy has been working on software modifications for three weeks and will deploy three Aegis-equipped ships to intercept the 5,000-pound National Reconnaissance Office imagery satellite somewhere in the northern hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean in the coming weeks, said Marine Corps Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Cartwright refused say which ships will be deployed or where they will go to fire. The Navy has three cruisers — the Shiloh, the Lake Erie and the Port Royal — equipped with ballistic missile defense capabilities, and 15 destroyers.

Cartwright said a “window of opportunity” for an attempt to shoot down the satellite with a ballistic missile will open in two to three days and is expected to last as long as seven to eight days. If the first shot misses, the Navy will have two backup missiles and as long as two days to make a decision on a second attempt. The goals are to destroy the hydrazine rocket fuel and to push the satellite on a trajectory to land in the ocean, Cartwright said.

“If we fire at the satellite, the worst is that we miss. If we graze the satellite, we’re still better off because we’ll bring it down sooner and more predictably,” he said. “The regret factor of not acting clearly outweighs the regret factors of acting.”
If it is not intercepted, the satellite is expected to hit the atmosphere sometime in early March. The path it would take as it tumbled through the atmosphere would be “very, very unpredictable and impossible to engage,” Cartwright said.

Brief History of Navy Tattoos

The United States Navy has the longest and richest military tattoo tradition. The anchor symbol has become one of the most easily recognizable tattoos in the world. The sailors introduced the practice of tattooing to the other military branches in the early 1900's when they would return from voyages that had literally taken them around the world. As the sailors traveled to distant places and saw that the art of tattooing was alive and well, they began to create tattoos that represented who they were as a group.

2009 Military Pay Raise Proposed

2009 Military Pay Raise Proposed President Bush's administration has released his 2009 National Defense budget request. The administration is requesting an across-the-board raise of 3.4 percent in basic pay for all military personnel. If approved, this pay raise will go into effect on January 1, 2009.

Here are some common examples of what a 3.4 percent pay increase would mean:

  • An E-4 with more than three years of service now earns $1,949.10 per month; that would rise to $2,015.40 a month
  • An E-7 with more than 10 years of service now earns $3,263.10 per month; that would rise to $3,374.10 per month.
  • An O-3 with more than six years of service now earns $4,763.10 per month; that would rise to $4,925.10 per month.

Do Your Taxes for FREE!

Did you know as an active duty Navy family you can get your taxes done for FREE?

The military-based VITA (Volunteer Income Assistance) Program sites provide free tax advice, tax preparation, return filing, and other tax assistance to military members and their families. The Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) which consists of the tax program coordinators for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard oversees the operation of the military tax programs worldwide and serves as the main conduit for outreach by the IRS to military personnel and their families. Airmen, soldiers, sailors, marines, and guardsmen and their families worldwide get tax preparation help at offices within their installations. VITA sites provide free tax advice, tax preparation, and assistance to military members and their families. They are trained and equipped to address military specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits and the effect of the new Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) guidelines.
(source-Military Onesource.com)

Many installations and some larger commands offer the Military Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. To find a VITA site near you call a Military OneSource tax consultant at 1-800-730-3802, or contact the Legal Assistance office at your nearest installation.

Getting the Most for your Grocery Dollar

We went to the new Commissary on 32nd Street in San Diego the other night, and I loved it! Much improved over the commissary that we visited when we were stationed here the last time. As always they have great prices (they had whole ORGANIC chicken for 59cents a pound!). It is HUGE. Most of the isles were so wide that you could easily maneuver 3 shopping carts through them. Not to mention the beautiful produce, and the best meat counter I've ever seen at a commissary. It was great to walk out of with nearly a cart full of food for $92 bucks! Something I haven't been able to do anywhere else in San Diego.

Here's an bit from Military.com wrote up on the new website.
~ The Defense Commissary Agency's (DeCA's) new and improved website at commissaries.com is a great way for commissary shoppers to discover their benefit and stay connected to what's happening in their commissary wherever they are stationed. The website includes a new section that promotes health and wellness and an "Ask the DeCA Dietitian" section where customers can exchange comments with the DeCA dietitian and other users. The website also lists what is on sale in the "Savings Aisle" under the "Shopping" tab. Customers can print a list of all items on sale at their local commissary and find Internet coupons on the "Links" page. The "Kay's Kitchen" section also provides lots of quick, easy and nutritional recipes.

Helping Out in San Diego

Today there are nearly three quarters of a million children under the age of five years in military families, the most since World War II. When a family member deploys, the whole family "deploys" requiring equal parts of sacrifice and courage .
(Cuba Gooding Jr. from PBS special: "When Parents Deploy")

With several hundred thousand service members and with more than 20,000 military families in San Diego, SDMOM (San Diego Military Outreach Ministries) is busy helping with urgent needs, personal caring and household and food assistance.

SDMOM mostly serves the junior enlisted military family, typically headed by a 18-23 year old, with young children, away from home, and trying to survive in our expensive economy on a low salary while struggling with high debt and the family stresses of deployment.

Please take a moment to visit thier website and show your support to this wonderful charity.

Navy Life Right @ Home

Funny email I recieved from Hubby the last time he was underway :)

Here are a few suggestions on how to experience the real Navy life, right in the comfort of your own home.

  • Buy a dumpster, paint it gray and live in it for 6 months straight.
  • Run all of the piping and wires inside your house on the outside of the walls.
  • Pump 10 inches of nasty, crappy water into your basement, then pump it out, clean up, and paint the basement "deck gray"
  • Every couple of weeks, dress up in your best clothes and go the scummiest part of town, find the most run down, trashy bar you can, pay $10 per beer until you're hammered, then walk home in the freezing cold.
  • Perform a weekly disassembly and inspection of your lawnmower.
  • On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays turn your water temperature up to 200 degrees, then on Tuesday and Thursday turn it down to 10 degrees.
  • On Saturdays, and Sundays declare to your entire family that they used too much water during the week, so all showering is secured.
  • Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling.
  • Have your next door neighbor come over each day at 5am, and blow a whistle really loud and shout "Reveille, Reveille, all hands heave out and trice up"
  • Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in the back yard at 6am and read it to you.
  • Eat the raunchiest Mexican food you can find for three days straight, then lock the bathroom door for 12 hours, and hang a sign on it that reads "Secured - contact OA DIV at X-3053"
  • Submit a request form to your father-in-law, asking if it's ok for you to leave your house before 3pm.
  • Invite 200 of your not-so-closest friends to come over, then board up all the windows and doors to your house for 6 months. After the 6 months is up, take down the boards, and since you're on duty, wave at your friends and family through the front window of your home...you can't leave until the next day.
  • Shower with above-mentioned friends.
  • Make your family qualify to operate all the appliances in your home(i.e. Dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc.)
  • Walk around your car for 4 hours checking the tire pressure every 15 minutes.
  • Sit in your car and let it run for 4 hours before going anywhere. This is to ensure your engine is properly "lit off".
  • Empty all the garbage bins in your house, and sweep your driveway 3 times a day, whether they need it or not.
  • Repaint your entire house once a month.
  • Cook all of your food blindfolded, groping for any spice and seasoning you can get your hands on.
  • Have your neighbor collect all your mail for a month, randomly losing every 5th item.
  • Spend $20,000 on a satellite system for your TV, but only watch CNN and the Weather Channel.
  • Have your 5-year-old cousin give you a haircut with goat shears.
  • Post a menu on the refrigerator door informing your family that you are having steak for dinner. Then make them wait in line for at least an hour, when they finally get to the kitchen, tell them that you are out of steak, but you have dried ham or hot dogs. Repeat daily until they don't pay attention to the menu any more they just ask for hot dogs.
  • In the middle of January, place a podium at the end of your driveway. Have you family stand watches at the podium, rotating at 4-hour intervals.

Navy Wife's Prayer

Small post today. Found this and wanted to share it.
Take Care.

Navy Wife's Prayer
Author Unknown

Dear Lord, give me greatness of heart to see,
The difference between duty and his love for me.
Give me a task to do each day,
to help pass the time while he is away;
Give me the understanding, so that I may know,
That when duty calls he must go;
And, Dear Lord, when he goes out to sea,
please bring him home safely to me.

Hubby got me a Kitchenaid for a Westpac Survival Gift when he came home a few years back and I l-o-v-e, love it! It sits a top my fridge under its tan cover with brown trim. My Kitchenaid IS this gun metal grey (like I said, it was a gift from a MAN), but the description says it would look great on any of their colors. I am SOOO getting this :)

Reduce/Reuse/Recyle

So we all know about the three R's right? Reduce Reuse Recycle. I'm thinking we all have a pretty good idea about the recycle part but what about the other two?

Paper or plastic? How about NEITHER! Both paper & plastic consume energy and generate waste. A simple way to Reduce AND Reuse is to, bring reusable bags like a sturdy canvas tote to the grocery store, dry cleaner, bookstore, mall, and wherever else you go. Just say "no, thanks, I don't need a bag, I brought one of my own." and your well on your way to knocking out all three R's more often :)

Check out this neat product that not only helps the environment, but its cute too! This 100% cotton canvas tote bag has plenty of room to carry everything you need when you are on the go.
